  1.                                F O N T S P E C   (version 3.2)

  4. PROGRAM:        FONTSPEC, a TrueType font viewer and type specimen printer.
  5.                 As a viewer, you can display your TrueType fonts in sizes
  6.                 from 8 to 98 points, using different effects and in various
  7.                 justification modes. In print mode you can produce quality
  8.                 formatted font specimen sheets in single or two column, or
  9.                 full sheets. You can select just about everything you can
  10.                 think of to customize your font specimens just the way you
  11.                 want them.

  13. REQUIREMENTS:   WINDOWS 3.1 (or higher), printer.
  14.                 Lots of memory for both computer and printer (natch!)
  15.  
  16. MARKETING:      SHAREWARE (not freeware). Please feel free to distribute this
  17.                 program to everyone as long as no monies are collected, except
  18.                 for a small disk distribution fee if necessary.

  27. SET-UP:         You should have the following 5 files:
  28.  
  29.                 README  .TXT ................ This file
  30.                 FONTSPEC.EXE ................ Main program, copy it to a
  31.                                               subdirectory of your choice
  32.                 FONTSPEC.DLL ................ Copy to Windows subdirectory
  33.                 SS3D2   .VBX ................ Copy to Windows subdirectory
  34.                 THREED  .VBX ................ Copy to Windows subdirectory
  35.  
  36.                 Note: You should obtain VBRUN200.DLL which is not included
  37.                       with this distribution, but is required for FontSpec
  38.                       to run. This file is probably available from the same
  39.                       source you received FontSpec from.
  40.  
  41.                       Also, your system should have the two fonts Arial and
  42.                       Arial Bold installed. Both fonts are supplied with
  43.                       Windows. FontSpec makes use of both these fonts.

  45.                 To run FontSpec just give its' full pathname to your program
  46.                 launcher, to your program manager, or just double-click it
  47.                 from the file manager.

  50. LET'S GET STARTED
  51. -----------------
  52. Run FontSpec. You should know right off that FontSpec does nothing to your
  53. system so don't be afraid to experiment -- NO system changes are ever made.

  55. You should be looking at the Viewer form. Here you can select any typeface
  56. from the drop-down list box (click on the down-arrow to see the list).
  57. Select any font by clicking on it. You should immediately see a sample of the
  58. font in the sample text window. Now click the check boxes in the Effects
  59. frame to view your font in Italics, or bold, or underline, or all of these.
  60. The three pushbuttons in the Effects frame justify the sample text either
  61. flush left, centered, or flush right.

  63. There are five command buttons in the lower left corner of the Viewer form:
  64.  
  65.       Sample Text........... Displays the words "Sample Type"
  66.       Character Set......... Displays the font's alphabet, numerals, etc.
  67.       Paragraph............. Displays a paragraph of text
  68.  
  69.       User Defined #1 & #2.. Both of these can be set up to display your
  70.                              own customized text. More about that later.
  71.  
  72. The Font Size frame allows you to select any point size from 8 to 98 points.
  73.  
  74. Okay then, select a font (maybe Arial?), select center justify, select
  75. 12 point size, click on the Paragraph button bar. If necessary, you can
  76. scroll the text up or down using the scrollbar just to the right of the
  77. sample text window. You can view any of your installed fonts this way.

  79. At the form's top right, you'll notice 5 buttons:
  80.  
  81.       Printer................... Switches to the Printer form
  82.       Metrics................... Displays information about the current font
  83.       Set-Up.................... Customize FontSpec
  84.       Question (About) Button... Displays a begging screen
  85.       Stop...................... Ends the program

  87. Try the Question button first. Now you know why I call this a begging screen.
  88. If, after trying FontSpec, you find it useful then feel free to help support
  89. its' continued evolution by sending in your $19 bucks. Please don't think
  90. the "other guy" will send it in -- he (or she) probably won't, so I'm
  91. counting ON YOU!   Okay, enough about this, but please keep it in mind.

  93. Click on the Metrics button. If you were displaying Arial you should see
  94. all of the variations available, the size of the base font, type of font,
  95. family name, etc.

  97. Click on the Set-Up button. The Page Header and Page Footer options are
  98. used on the printed type specimen sheets. If you'd like, go ahead and enter
  99. whatever you want in these two options, or you can leave them alone.
  100.  
  101. The two User Defined Type Specimen frames correspond to the two User Defined
  102. buttonbars. You can enter your own text or click on the Default Value
  103. buttons to have FontSpec enter text for you, or you can leave them blank.
  104. It's up to you. To save your changes, click on the OK button. To get out of
  105. the Set-Up without saving your changes, press the ESC key.

  107. If you've entered text into the User Defined boxes then you might want to
  108. try them out now.
  109.  
  110. IMPORTANT: Whatever text is selected with the buttonbars (what you see in
  111.            the sample text window) will be used as the type specimen for
  112.            your printed sheets. So before switching to the Printer form
  113.            be sure you've selected the sample text you want.

  115. You can exit FontSpec by clicking on the Stop button at the top right of
  116. the form.

  120. PRINTER OPTION:
  121. --------------
  122. Click on the Printer button. The Printer form displays two list boxes. The
  123. list box on the left shows all available typefaces. You can either click
  124. on the fonts you want to print or you can click on the Select All Fonts
  125. buttonbar. If you click on individual fonts you will see their name added
  126. to the Fonts-To-Print box, and a sample of the font will be displayed in
  127. the Quick View frame. If you click on the Select All Fonts buttonbar then
  128. all the fonts will be added to the Fonts-To-Print box.

  130. You can remove individual fonts from the Fonts-To-Print box by clicking on the
  131. font name, or you can remove all the fonts by clicking on the Clear All Fonts
  132. buttonbar.

  134. Note that as soon as even one font is selected a jumbo PRINT button appears.
  135. You can print anytime this button is visible (but don't do it yet).

  137. Just below the font list boxes are three option frames:
  138.  
  139.      Sheet Style:  Single Column prints selected font samples in one line.
  140.                    Two Column (default) prints a page of 2-column samples.
  141.                    Full Sheet prints character sets, paragraphs and samples.
  142.  
  143.      Print Styles: This frame will disappear if you select the Full Sheet
  144.                    Style since the Full Sheet Style prints everything.
  145.                    Select the various styles you want to print. If your
  146.                    system does not have the selected styles available then
  147.                    FontSpec will create the italic style for you but it
  148.                    will ignore the bold and bold-italic styles if you do not
  149.                    really have them because their spacing would not be the
  150.                    same.

  152.      Options:      You can choose to add the time on each printed page. The
  153.                    date is added automatically. And you can choose to print
  154.                    your type samples in all caps if you wish (some fonts
  155.                    don't have lowercase letters).

  157. Next, select the sample size from the Points frame. If you've selected the
  158. Full Sheet Style then the Points frame will not be available since the
  159. Full Sheet Style prints various point sizes. I've found that 18 point type
  160. works best (this is the default).

  163. FINAL WORDS BEFORE PRINTING:
  164. ---------------------------
  165. First, make sure your printer is on and ready (of course). More important,
  166. you should know that it takes quite a while to print specimen sheets.
  167. Actually, FontSpec is quite fast but it waits alot for windows to do it's
  168. thing. In any event you may want to print just a few fonts at first to
  169. get a feel for what it takes before clicking the Select All Fonts
  170. buttonbar (which I'm sure you'll do soon enough).
  171.  
  172. Next, you should know that laser printers require alot of memory to produce
  173. the type of quality product that FontSpec generates. As an example, you
  174. should be able to print hundreds of fonts using the single or two-column
  175. style sheets and a laser printer with 1-meg of memory, but selecting the
  176. full sheet style requires at least 3-megs to print multiple sheets (you
  177. should be able to print 1 or 2 sheets with 1-meg).

  179. Finally, when you press the Print button you will see progress activity just
  180. to the left of the button showing the current font being printed, what page
  181. number is printing and elapsed print time. Also, the jumbo Print button is
  182. replaced with a jumbo Stop button. You can press this at any time to abort
  183. your print job. If you press the Stop button, be patient... FontSpec stops
  184. printing immediately but windows may take awhile to catch up to what's
  185. going on. During the print operation, the only button you will be able to
  186. click is the Stop button, everything else will be disabled. There really
  187. is no reason to click on the Stop button unless something goes wrong...
  188. just let the program print your pages and it will stop and return control
  189. to you when everything is printed.

  191. When you are not printing, you can click the Exit button to end the program
  192. or click on the OK button to switch back to FontSpec's Viewer form.

  195. COMMENTS:
  196. --------
  197. I wrote this program because I wanted to review my font collection in
  198. different ways. After trying the other available programs I felt a more
  199. comprehensive program such as FontSpec might be welcomed. Of course,
  200. one man's treasure is another man's junk (or is that the other way around?).
  201. Anyway, if you think FontSpec should be improved in some way please don't
